Do not pre-incubate bottles prior to shipment.

Specimen Requirements:
Preferred:
Blood culture bottles other than those compatible with local blood culture instrumentation While not optimal, smaller quantitites of blood may be productive. Adults: < or = 8 mL. Children: Any amount of blood from 0.5 mL per bottle is acceptable, but at least 1 mL is preferred. Volume varies with the bottle manufacturer's requirements.

Acceptable:
Bone maarow specimen in blood culture bottles other than those compatible with local automated blood culture instrumentation.

Transport Temperature: Room temperature

Methodology: Manual blood culture by conventional (non-automated) methods and routine identification procedures when positive. Antibiotic susceptibility testing when appropriate.
