The culture isolates and identifies Mycoplasma hominis which can cause genital related infections. Although 20% of apparently healthy women carry M. hominis, this organism may cause opportunistic infections resulting in pelvic inflammatory disease, vaginosis, adverse pregnancy outcomes or postpartum fevers.

1. Source of specimen is required. Indicate the exact site where
the specimen was obtained.
2. Acceptable specimens: Genital (cervix, urethra, vagina), Fluids
(semen, prostatic secretions, urine).
Unacceptable specimens: Swabs (dry, calcium, alginate, wood),
Specimens (respiratory); Specimens collected and transported in
M4RT media.
3. Ship to Specialty within 24 hours of collection on cold pack.
4. Refer to Appendix B for detailed collection instructions.
