Test Performed At Specialty Laboratories
Clinical Utilities Adenovirus antigens of various subtypes occur in patients with suspected viral gastroenteritis, lower respiratory infection, conjunctivitis or other infections. Sensitivity varies by site and subtype. A combined diagnostic approach will yield best results. A PCR-based assay, the Adenovirus DNA DetectR, test code #7589, is the most sensitive and specific assay for adenovirus detection and may be used on samples from a variety of sources including whole blood and nasopharyngeal aspirates. For rapid detection of respiratory Adenovirus Ag, a respiratory swab is preferred for test code #2509 Adenovirus by DFA. For infant viral gastroenteritis, a stool swab in M4 transport media is preferred for test code #2410 Viral Culture or #7589 Adenovirus DNA DetectR.

  Collection Notes
  1. Specimens should be collected early in the acute phase of
infection. The chance of viral recovery is best during the first
3 days after onset and is greatly reduced beyond 5 days with many
viruses.
2. Source of specimen is recommended.
3. Submit 2 acetone-fixed slides or specimens in viral transport
media. These specimens are nasal swab or washings, eye, and rectal.
Ship to Specialty in slide holder at ambient temperature.
4. Stool: Place 1-2 grams of unpreserved stool in a sterile container.
Ship refrigerated or if held longer than 72 hours, freeze at -70C
(not -20C) and ship on dry ice.
5. Unacceptable specimens: Wooden swabs, dry swabs and calcium
alginate.
6. Do not freeze specimen at -20C. Virus loses infectivity.
7. Ship specimens on cold pack or on dry ice.
8. Specialty provides M4 transport media (M4) and dacron-tipped swabs
with plastic or fine-wire shafts available for use with M4. Please
call Client Services, 800-421-4449 to request media.
